RAQS SHARQUI - Was genau ist das?
There are many theories about its origins, one of them is that the dance had its roots in India and was spread in the occident by the gipsies. Others say it was born in the ancient Egypt, believing in its relation with ancient ritual dances in the stone age, as part of religions that worshiped the Great Goddess. It is also believed that the dance existed as an art form in the Roman Empire courts, as well as later in the Ottoman Empire (Turkey). It is believed that in the meantime the dance was spread through the whole arabic world." The ancient belly dancers used to dance in full moon nights at the temples dedicated to HAAT Goddess, whom provided them fertility and feminility. Nowadays in Egypt, there are are some weddings where they still hold the tradition of drawing the engaged couple hands on the dancer's belly as a fertility ritual.
